If I'm going to the Philippines whats your big suggestion for me to go see?
Manila for sure...the city is incredible as are its people. With over 11 million people in the city itself it creates an impressive mix of sights, sounds and sometimes smells...the food is amazing and affordable. And how the traffic continues to continuously move is baffling to me. As highly urbanized as it is Manila is one of my favorite "big" cities I've been to in Asia.
I would recommend visiting mountains of the north in Luzon and the islands in the south towards Mindanao and the surrounding areas. Its a real amazing how different the country is from end to end. Cities like Manila and Davao which lies at the southern most tip are highly urbanized and chaotic the thousands of islands that make up thw country are a testament to the beauty & diversity of its ecosystem. When visiting my family I spend most of my time on the tiny island of Camiguin. At times it appears almost untouched by man with its volcanos, naturally heated spring fed pools, cold "soda" springs, natural waterfalls and white sand beaches yet has just enough comforts so you can remain in touch with folks back home if necessary.
Their food, history and culture are rich and the people are humble yet proud of their roots...I truly never understood thw meaning of silence till my first night there. No buzzing of electricity, no cars.passing by...nothing. Only the sounds of island life living and breathing since the day its volcanos rose from the seas.
What did you want to be when you grew up?
I wanted to be a weather man. I didn't know anything about meteorology or the study of weather patterns or even that schooling was necessary (otherwise I would have quickly moved on to my second choice...rock star)
I grew up in Florida so when hurricane season came around this real serious guy with a flat top would come on the television and inform the public of the current hurricane or tropical storm that was on its way. He was almost Dirty Harry-ish in his delivery. He seemed so cool to me....way cooler than the weather celebrities we have today...
What do you want to be when you grow up now?
Do you like location or studio best?
Studio. I like the controlled environment. You can make it light, dark or a little of both. I suppose its easier to manipulate what is seen and heard in a studio then nothing beats natural sunlight and a few well placed clouds.
What's your favorite film genre to work in?
Right now, I would say drama or suspense. I've always gravitated towards that. I like the darker characters. There are so many great examples of actors who can create such layered characters in roles like that. I have my favorites and those roles coupled with a great story are the ones that impact me the most and cause me to hopefully do something that would impact someone in a similar way as well. Its all had a very challenging appeal to me.
Any memorable response that you've had to your work?
When I started I did mostly print or commercial/industrial work. I remember my first agent telling me I had an interesting look. To be honest I didnt know how to take what she said.... to me that's what people say when they aren't a fan of a dish but they don't want to be rude because the chef is standing nearby.
I later found out what she said wasn't a bad thing after all.
I recently auditioned for an actors showcase out west. I was told I had range...somewhere between a bank teller and a person who would rob that same bank at gunpoint. That felt pretty good. It made those acting classes feel worthwhile and a great encouragement.
What music is in your heavy rotation right now?
I'm currently on an emotional high which means lots of stuff both new and old. My joe job affords me the luxury of having my ear buds in for as long as I'm on the clock which makes work tolerable.
I love the new Mastodon. The new Slipknot is pretty fun. Jack White's new one is really good. I just heard that for the first time the other day.
Then there's Massive Attack, The Cardigans, Thrice, Dillinger Escape Plan, the Chariot, ELO, Deftones, Claude Debussy and Mike Patton's cataloG that is always in there somewhere...and then there's the podcasts...lots of those.
I could go on and on but that's what comes to mind at the moment.
What superpower would you like to have and why?
Time travel. There are alot of things on this planet I would love to have seen happen (or maybe even prevent if I could)... and some that I would like to see if they really occurred.
